BATTLESHIP begins in 2005, when NASA discovers an extra-solar planet with conditions similar to Earth. On the chance that it contains intelligent life, NASA transmits a powerful signal from a communications array based in Hawai’i. Around the same time, the talented but undisciplined slacker Alex Hopper (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ Taylor Kitsch) attempts to impress a woman by breaking into a convenience store to get her a chicken burrito; instead, he gets tasered by the police. Stone Hopper (TRUE BLOOD’s Alexander Skarsgård), a naval officer, attempts to give his younger brother some direction by forcing him to join the Navy.

Jump to the present day on the island of Oahu, and Alex Hopper is now a Navy Lieutenant serving on the USS John Paul Jones. The woman he tried to impress seven years ago is now his fiancée, Sam, a physical therapist specializing in the rehabilitation of military combat vets. The Hoppers are preparing to participate in the RIMPAC, the world's largest international maritime exercise, led by surly, no-nonsense Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson), who is not only the Hopper boys’ superior, but is also Sam’s father. This is bad news for Alex, whom Shane considers a loose cannon with a track record of insubordination. It doesn’t help that Alex gets into an altercation with Captain Yugi Nagata (Japanese superstar Tadanobu Asano), the commanding officer of the Japanese destroyer Myōkō. With his days numbered, Alex sets off on what may be his last mission on John Paul Jones as it ventures to sea to participate in the war exercises.

Meanwhile, a small fleet of alien ships arrives in response to the NASA signal. The fleet crashes into the ocean, offshore from Oahu. The Sampson, John Paul Jones, and Myōkō are sent to investigate, but are trapped when one of the ships erects an impenetrable forcefield around the Hawai’ian Islands. The three destroyers attempt to establish contact, but are attacked by a second alien vessel: Sampson and Myōkō are destroyed, and John Paul Jones is damaged with the commanding and executive officers killed, forcing Alex to take command, leaving a ragtag team of junior officers including hip hop royalty Rihanna as a spunky petty officer in her big screen debut. Cut off from the rest of the fleet and human civilization, the John Paul Jones and its remaining crew must outwit and outlast an alien superior force in an ultimate naval battle for the survival of the human race!

Former child actor-turned-director Peter Berg has entered the Hollywood stratosphere with such hits as HANCOCK, THE KINGDOM and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. His film borrows from other pop culture faves like INDEPENDENCE DAY, STAR TREK, TRANSFORMERS, and ARMAGEDDON, crafting a grand popcorn entertainment that needs to be witnessed on the biggest screen possible. As the title’s tagline says: In the summer of 2012, the battle for Earth begins at sea.
